Lead, FMJ, and TMJ Ammo: What's the Difference?

May 17, 2026 · AmmoBin.com

Beyond FMJ vs JHP, you'll see plain lead and TMJ (total metal jacket). The difference matters for cost, fouling, and especially indoor-range lead exposure.

The three practice bullet types

  • Lead (LRN/cast) — cheapest, but exposes lead and fouls more; banned at some indoor ranges
  • FMJ — lead core jacketed except the exposed base; the standard practice round
  • TMJ — lead fully encased (including the base) for the lowest airborne lead, popular for indoor ranges

Which to choose

For outdoor plinking, plain lead or FMJ is cheapest. For indoor ranges (or to minimize lead exposure), TMJ or 'totally encased' loads are the cleaner choice. See FMJ vs JHP for the defensive-bullet side.

All are practice ammo — buy whichever is cheapest and range-appropriate. Compare live 9mm prices.

Frequently asked questions

What is TMJ ammo?

Total Metal Jacket — the lead core is fully encased, including the base, which reduces airborne lead. It's popular for indoor ranges where exposed-lead ammo may be restricted.

Is TMJ better than FMJ?

For indoor ranges and minimizing lead exposure, yes. Otherwise they perform similarly for practice; FMJ is often a bit cheaper.
